2026 Groton-Dunstable Elementary Science Fair

GDEF will be sponsoring the GD Elementary Science Fair which will take place on March 14 at Florence Roche ES. All children in grades K-4 from both elementary schools are invited to participate. The main goal of the science fair is for student participants to engage in the scientific process in a fun and supportive environment.

Adaptive Tricycle

This grant funds the purchase of an adaptive tricycle for the Physical Therapy department. Adaptive tricycles provide the appropriate students with a tool to develop their endurance, lower extremity and trunk strength.

Professional Videography Editing Footage: Bingo Night

This grant would purchase a multi-user educational license for Bingo Night, a 15-minute PG-13 comedy. It would provide students in the videography class (starting 3rd term this year and then in classes running thereafter) the opportunity to edit professionally shot footage, which can then be used as a portfolio piece for college or a professional job should they go into movie making or a video production career.

Yoga and Literacy with Friendly Kids Yoga

Boutwell will be working with Ellen Olson-Brown of Friendly Kids' Yoga to teach small group sessions of yoga during the 2025-26 school year. Friendly Kids' Yoga classes teach skills to help kids develop inner and outer friendliness while working on nervous system regulation, self-compassion, communication and social skill development. The classes will blend structured curriculum and kid-directed play/project time.

System Design through Engineering

The Project Lead the Way (PLTW) class is built on the "learning by doing" philosophy. Students work in collaborative groups to design, build and test solutions for structural challenges. To create their designs, the curriculum needs foundational supplies such as wire, magnets, wooden coffee stir sticks, tacky glue, and popsicle sticks.

Disc Golf Unit

Disc golf is an accessible sport that requires minimal equipment, promotes outdoor movement and offers a non-contact and inclusive alternative for students who may not find enjoyment in traditional team sports. Disc golf equipment will last for multiple years and will be used frequently throughout the school year by all 7th and 8th grade students at the GDRMS.

Graphic Novels in the World Language Classroom for student engagement

In order to support Spanish novice language learners at the high school level, this grant will provide the annual teacher license for online access and two sets of classroom Spanish graphic novels from the interactive Senor Wooly online program. This eLearning program adjusts to the needs of all learners, engages through activities and improves student language proficiency.

Robotomies

The Robotomies is GD's FIRST Robotics team. They seek support from GDEF to help fund robot parts and a portion of the competition entry fee for the FIRST competition. The Robotomies team is doing very well - earning spots in the final rounds of the district and world competitions this past year as well as competing in the MA State Championship games and a post-season competition at WPI.

Sheryl Faye - Historical Women actor

Sheryl Faye is an actor who portrays influential women from history by bringing their stories to life through multi-media one-woman shows for young learners. Swallow Union 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders will "meet" historical figures such as Helen Keller (grade 2), American Revolution: Abigail Adams (grade 3) and Anne Frank (grade 4) during these immersive experiences.

The MS Science Fair will take place on March 28 for students in grades 5-8. The main goal of the science fair is for participants to have fun while engaging in the scientific process. Students will have the opportunity to learn specifics about a scientific subject through research, perform a scientific experiment, use their creative skills to explain their scientific project, and orally communicate their explanation to judges, peers, and families at the science fair.

Visiting Artist: Judy Romatelli (Community Glass Art Project & Installation Preparation)

GDRHS has invited local artist Judy Romatelli (Periwinkle Art & Glassworks) back to the school to lead a fused glass workshop with students who have expressed an interest in art. Each student will create a fused glass leaf that will be placed onto a 2D or 3D sculpture in the shape of a tree. This is the second phase of a collaborative community glass mural first begun in 2023 with a grant from the Arts Boosters. The workshop will be held during Term 3 (January - April 2026) when most advanced art classes are scheduled and will include 60-80 students in those classes. The tree sculpture will be permanently installed in a highly visible location either at GDRHS or downtown Groton.

Making Math Meaningful: Developing Mathematical Reasoning for Groton Dunstable Students

GDEF funded the purchase of (30) sets of Rekenrek manipulatives for use by all District kindergarten and grade 1 teachers, including SPED teachers.

Making a Communication System: A Working Paper Speaker

In alignment with MA science, technology and engineering (STE) standards and requirements, 7th grade students spend two weeks building working paper speakers. This unit explains the function of a communication system and the role of key components: the source, encoder, transmitter, receiver, decoder and storage. This grant funds the purchase (60) reusable paper speaker kits for hands-on learning in the classroom.

HOSA is a national program that allows students to learn about healthcare careers and compete in health-related events. This sponsorship provides funding for student attendence at the 2026 State Leadership Conference.

Introducing African American Studies Advanced Placement

Currently there is growing student interest in an Advanced Placement African American Studies class. The History department would like to run the class as a pilot during the 2026/27 school year with the goal of making the class permanent in the program of studies. This grant funds the purchase of (25) AP-approved textbooks required for the pilot.

The Outsiders Musical Field Trip

This year's 8th grade has shown high-level enthusiasm about the ELA unit on S.E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders. The Tony-award winning Broadway stage adaptation of The Outsiders will be showing in Boston this spring and the 8th grade will be attending a show on April 8th at 7:00pm. This grant funds help offset the cost of ticket admission to families.

Screening of Screenagers: Elementary Edition

A group of parents will be hosting two screenings of the documentary Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition on March 3rd and 7th in the GDRMS Performing Arts Center. Each screening will include a moderator to facilitate discussion and share actions families can take to establish healthy screen boundaries. These screenings would be offered to FloRo, SU and GDRMS families.

Revamping the Courtyard Space in the Stoddart Building

The courtyard space in the MS Stoddart Building (housing 5th and 6th grades) has significant deterioration of the garden planting beds and is currently overrun by invasive species.This grant requested funding for supplies to help repair and revitalize the courtyard space so it is suitable for experiential student learning opportunities in STEM. Work began last year with a successful community courtyard cleanup which brought together current and former students, faculty and administration, and family members who want to improve the space.

​Parents Partnering for School-wide Social Success

Florence Roche requested funds to implement a new program called Parents for Caring Schools (a program developed by Harvard's Graduate School of Education.) This program will train a parent to lead fun and engaging lessons which teach students how to treat others with kindness, expand their circle of care, understand emotions while building a stronger sense of belonging at school. These lessons will be taught to students during FloRo's monthly all-school meetings during the 2025-26 school year and will utilize parent volunteers to plan and run them. The grant provides funds for access to the curriculum, program books, and assembly supporting materials.
