The Groton Dunstable Education Foundation Reaches for the Stars

“Together, a promise to excel” is one of the themes at the Groton Dunstable Regional School District which has been adopted in spirit by the Groton Dunstable Education Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to enhance the success of our public schools by providing private funds for innovative, inspiring programs and opportunities.  Early on in the conception of the Education Foundation’s mission, Groton designer Gina Milan of Milan Concept and Design captured the essence of striving for excellence by creating a logo of  “reaching for the stars."  Milan says, “It is my hope that this logo will inspire all of us in our communities to support our children in their effort to become the best they can be.”

Reaching for the stars was also chosen as the decorating theme for the Education Foundation’s first major fundraiser being held on Friday evening, October 10th, at Jos. Kilbridge Antiques here in Groton.   The district’s fine arts coordinator Susan Doherty enthusiastically agreed to involve students in creating the “star” artwork to be used as decorations. Says Doherty, “As fine arts coordinator for the school district, I was intrigued by the Ed Foundation's mission of helping our students to excel by "reaching for the stars."  I like the concept of creating an evening of coming together as a community to support this effort.  It is wonderful that our students will be participating by actually creating artwork - stars - that will be used to decorate the tents and tables at the Antique Preview Party.  Knowing that parents will then be able to purchase stars made by the children and thereby contributing to the Ed Foundation, creates a feeling of community-wide support which is one of my hopes for the Groton Dunstable Regional School District."

Many  “Community Stars” from Groton and Dunstable are also shining at this event through creative auction donations that represent the many wonderful talents of folks in our two communities.  These range anywhere from knitting lessons to local artisan donations to jewelry crafted from local granite to enabling school children to interact via birthday party or other creative activity with local community organizations to a handcrafted basket, just to name a few.

To round out the star theme, included in the October 10th gala will be an evening of stargazing courtesy of Boston Telescope and the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium.   Glenn Chaple, a Groton Dunstable Regional School District Middle School Science teacher, will also be participating in this stargazing event.    Shawn Bryan, owner of Boston Telescope located in Newton, Massachusetts, has generously donated a telescope to be auctioned off and says, "Contributing to an event focused on stars fits in nicely with my business and I am always pleased to contribute to efforts to support public education.  I'm looking forward to a fun evening of stargazing."  He will be joined by staff from the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium in Concord, New Hampshire.  David McDonald of the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium is equally excited about providing an evening of stargazing for gala attendees.  "As the Director of Education of the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium, an organization committed to providing meaningful learning experiences for people of all ages, we are delighted to be part of an event benefiting a non-profit education foundation whose mission and commitment to the importance of education is similar to ours."

So this exciting evening is looking to be a “star filled” fun filled evening for all who attend.  Tickets are available through September 20th at The Main Street Café and Jos. Kilbridge Antiques in Groton, the Public Library in Dunstable and online at www.gdefinc.org.  Don’t miss out on the fun!
