Groton Dunstable Education Foundation

Groton Dunstable Education Foundation Receives Broad Community Support

As the GDEF's first major fundraiser on October 10th draws nearer, diverse groups from throughout the communities of Groton and Dunstable are rallying around to support this event - school personnel, elected officials, community non-profit organization and high school student, to name just a few.

The Education Foundation, which was formed as a separate entity to raise funds to support innovative programs for students in the Groton-Dunstable Regional Schools, is not part of the school system.  But that hasn’t stopped School District administrators, teachers and students from strongly supporting the Education Foundation and its first major fundraiser.  School administrators and teachers have brainstormed to offer some really wonderful auction items such as a golf outing, gourmet dinner, a North Shore boat tour or a ball game with an administrator or a rail trail ride or nature walk with a teacher  to name a few.

The School Committee has also donated a “Chair for the Night,” and.  Dunstable Selectman Susan Psaledakis will cook a Greek dinner for six for the highest bidder.

Non-profit community organizations have also offered a variety of unique auction donations.  The Groton Dunstable Educators’ Association has offered several gift certificates to area restaurants.  Through a donation from the Nashua River Watershed Association, Marion Stoddart will autograph and do a reading of the book about her activism in cleaning up the Nashua River, A River Ran Wild, to the lucky child whose parent wins that item.   The Tyngsborough-Dunstable Historical Society has donated use of the 1790 Schoolhouse in Dunstable for a special event and the Dunstable Conservation Commission has donated a cut your own Christmas tree.  The Groton Fire Department is donating a ride on a fire truck.  Many other exciting and interesting items and services from community organizations as well as the more traditional businesses have been donated.  For a complete listing check out www.gdefinc.org.

High School students are also active in supporting this event and have volunteered to act as babysitters, decorators, parking lot attendants, greeters, etc. - anything to help make the October 10th party a success.  Says High School senior Sarah Moskow,  ”I am excited to be working with the Education Foundation to help make this fundraiser a success.  The other high school students and I are enjoying helping the foundation with the knowledge that our efforts will eventually bring great programs to the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District."

School District Fine Arts Coordinator Susan Daugherty has planned a choral presentation by the award-winning High School Chorus during the festivities and also tells us that several high school students are creating artwork for the auction.  Sharon Schmidt, Director of Fundraising for the GDEF says, “My biggest vision in planning this event was to create a sense of community and this amazing generosity from such a broad base of supporters shows that this is happening above and beyond my expectations.”

Tickets are available through September 20th at The Main Street Café and Jos. Kilbridge Antiques in Groton, the Public Library in Dunstable and online at www.gdefinc.org.  Don’t miss out on the fun!
