Media Release High School
math students benefit from One of the twelve grants approved for funding during the January 2004 Foundation’s grant cycle was the Graphing Calculator Projection Technology program which included the purchase of equipment to enable utilization of the LCD projection technology already present in the classroom to improve instruction and student learning in the use of graphing calculators in all honors and college prep mathematics courses. This program has the capability to positively impact over 800 high school students. Some student comments overheard during the demonstration of this new technology were, “ ‘The teacher can’t always be peering over every kid’s shoulder and helping them personally. But with the calculator projection technology, every student can get first hand instructions from the teacher. It’s great! It really is!’, ‘ I really like the new TI-83 Plus graphing unit because it makes the complicated calculator process much easier to understand and follow. Before this system, I didn’t know about half of what my calculator could do’, ‘This calculator projection technology aids the TI-83 instruction greatly. The use of these devices is critical. How else would you so accurately depict a scatterplot? Therefore the projection screen with its large numbers and bold print delight my brain in the educational mode. So much, in fact, that I find myself asking fewer questions. Relying on computers and new age technology is just great in general, and I believe we should rely on hi-tech equipment even more in the future’. ” Visit the Foundation’s website www.gdefinc.org for more information on our Grants Program.
