The Groton Dunstable Education Foundation Announces Grant Recipients

The GDEF has completed the work of its second grant cycle, which closed on May 1, 2004.  Thirteen applications totaling more than $42,000 were received, including submissions benefiting all GDRSD schools as well as submissions from community organizations.   Following a vote by the GDEF Board of Directors on June 8th, ten grants have been approved for funding.  Individual grants were awarded across several disciplines and multiple grade levels, including grants to expand the teaching of mechanical drafting in 6th, 7th and 8th grades, to enrich the teaching of science at Prescott, and to facilitate the study of famous composers at Florence Roche, as well as exciting professional development opportunities for classroom teachers in the areas of math, Spanish and graphic design.  For an overview of grants awarded, visit the Grant Applications page on our website at www.gdefinc.org.

The GDEF’s focus was to fund any grant program or professional development experience that would provide enrichment to the quality of education in our publicly funded schools.  While the Foundation's vision focuses on academic- and arts-oriented programs, any programs which sought to engage a student's curiosity, encourage a lifelong love of learning and desire to strive for excellence, and embrace the overall development of the student were considered.  Grants Disbursement Director Kate McNierney says, "We received fewer applications in this cycle, yet the total amount requested was greater.  The board voted to fully fund five proposals and was able to partially fund five others.  When you consider the graphing calculator projection systems the GDEF purchased for the High School this past spring, in conjunction with the funding of mechanical drafting in the Middle School and additional training for Elementary teachers in the Math Investigations program, it is fair to say that within a year the Groton Dunstable Education Foundation has positively affected the math education of nearly every child in our school district.  While it is thrilling to be able to have this kind of impact, it is also important to acknowledge that what we are doing is enhancing the education already being provided in our schools by a lot of very dedicated teachers and administrators."

The GDEF thanks the communities of Groton and Dunstable for their continued support of the Ed Foundation’s commitment to fund grants which enhance the success of the GDRSD.  We are all working together to help our students Reach for the Stars.
