Media Release The Groton Dunstable Education Foundation announces grants recipients The GDEF has completed the work of its first grant cycle, which closed on January 8, 2004. Twenty applications totaling more than $42,000 were received, including submissions from all GDRSD schools as well as community organizations. Following a vote by GDEF Board of Directors on February 2nd, twelve grants have been approved for funding. Individual grants were awarded across several disciplines and multiple grade levels, including grants to fund an elementary school poetry immersion project; Mindstorm Robotics for the Middle School Science classes; a Visual and Cultural Literacy slide library and projector for the High School Art classes that will also be available for use by other schools in the District; the student led Community Action Team; a Wildlife Adaptations program for all 5th graders in the District; and exciting professional development opportunities for classroom teachers. For an overview of grants awarded, visit the Grant Applications page on our website at www.gdefinc.org. The GDEF’s focus was to fund any grant program or professional development experience that would provide enrichment to the quality of education in our publicly funded schools. While the Foundation's vision focuses on academic- and arts-oriented programs, any programs which sought to engage a student's curiosity, encourage a lifelong love of learning and desire to strive for excellence, and embrace the overall development of the student were considered. Grants Disbursement Director Kate McNierney says, “All of the applications were reviewed carefully and great consideration was given to each one. GDEF applauds the efforts of all those who applied and thanks them for their work. It’s important to know that another grant cycle with funding of up to $20,000 will commence in March with an application deadline sometime in early May.” Watch for more news about the upcoming grant cycle on our website at www.gdefinc.org.
