The Groton Dunstable Education Foundation's Spring Grant Cycle Closes, Tickets on Sale Now for Dinner, Drama and Dessert!

The Spring 2005 GDEF grant cycle closed last Friday, April 1, yielding a whopping $75,000 in funding requests, almost double the amount received in spring 2004.  With $20,000 earmarked for this disbursement cycle, the GDEF Grants Disbursement Committee and Foundation’s Board of Directors will face challenges in choosing which of the 28 grants submitted will be funded.  GDEF Grants Co-Director Kate McNierney is pleased with the breadth of the proposals submitted, explaining that they “come from all of the District's schools and from a broad range of curriculum areas - science, art, music, health, language arts, social studies, performing arts, math - for both regular education and special education students.  This is our largest grant cycle to date.”

The GDEF Grants Disbursement Committee will evaluate all applications and recommend individual proposals for funding to the full Board of Directors, who will make the final decision about which grants to fund.  The Grants Disbursement Committee includes Groton and Dunstable residents with diverse backgrounds and varied areas of interest and expertise, as well as a GDRSD administration representative.  Applicants will be notified the week of May 9, 2005, on the status of their grant applications and an announcement will be made to the public at the GDRSD School Committee meeting on May 18, 2005.  For a complete listing of grants already funded, visit www.gdefinc.org.

The steadily increasing number of grant requests underscores the demand for money to fund creative educational endeavors in an era in which even basic funding for  public schools is threatened.  The current cycle, in particular, illustrates the need for funding for equipment and curriculum support in all areas even as District students continue to perform well above the state average.  The GDEF is committed to finding new ways to raise capital to further its goal of enriching public school education in Groton and Dunstable.

The GDEF’s latest fundraising effort is the upcoming Dinner, Drama and Dessert! on April 29 and 30; ticket sales will be closing soon.  Don't miss out on this opportunity to experience the truly hilarious community production of Marc Carmoletti's Don't Dress for Dinner  and support our schools.  The April 30 performance will include the official debut of another GDEF-funded project, the performance by the High School Band and Chorus of visiting composer Sean O’Loughlin’s original composition celebrating Groton’s 350th anniversary.  Visit Jos. Kilbridge Antiques in Groton or the Dunstable Free Public Library to order tickets or go to www.gdefinc.org to download a ticket form.
